Section 1 General

1.1 Survey requirements

1.1.1 Survey requirements are given in the Vol 1, Pt 1, Ch 3, 4 Docking Surveys and In-water Surveys of the Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Naval Ships (hereinafter referred to as the Rules for Naval Ships).

1.1.2 The Owner/Naval Authority should provide the Surveyor with a clear shell expansion plan upon which the search lines marked on the hull have been clearly marked for guidance.

1.1.3 The general hull condition should be noted and the diver should be requested to pay particular attention to the rudders, rope guards, eddy plates, anodes, sonar domes and fairings, propellers, all sea inlets, stabilizers and stabilizer openings and bilge keels.

1.1.4 At the same time as inspecting items as detailed in Ch 8, 1.1 Survey requirements 1.1.3, all attachments/fastenings to the shell should be thoroughly checked and any defects should be recorded and reported.

1.1.5 On completion of the underwater examination, the diver should provide a well documented report which should be signed by the attending Surveyor and be submitted as part of the LR report.

1.1.6 At the In-water Survey, the diver should be requested to take the tailshaft clearance measurements and the Surveyor should witness the rudder bearing clearances if the design of the rudder allows this to be done.

1.2 Recognition of diving companies

1.2.1 A list of recognized diving companies is published in the LR publication List of Firms and Sites Recognized for In-water Surveys.

1.2.2 It is to be understood that recognition is subject to In-water Surveys being carried out in accordance with the requirements for In-water Surveys in the Rules for Naval Ships and under the surveillance of an LR Surveyor.

1.2.3 Recognition is based on the procedure as shown in the publication stated in Ch 8, 1.2 Recognition of diving companies 1.2.1 and any request should be made through the local Surveyors who should assess the company. Recognition is subject to the successful completion of In-water Survey trials.

1.2.4 Recognition is valid for three years, subject to the maintenance of all conditions in accordance with LR requirements.
