Section 3 Characters of Classification and class notations
3.1 Application3.1.1 The following are example notations:
3.2 Assignment of ice class3.2.1 The Rules include prescriptive requirements for stern first operation for Finnish Swedish Ice Class Rule (FS Rule) application for Ice Class 1C FS to Ice Class 1AS FS and Polar Class (PC Rule) application for Ice Class PC7 to Ice Class PC1. Currently, for higher PC ice classes assigned to the stern, the requirements of Ch 6 Direct Calculations and Non-Standard Load Scenarios for non standard load scenarios is to be followed to determine the load scenario for the propulsion unit for ships assigned PC3, PC2 and PC1 and the notation SFIC. This is due to the limited operational experience of such propulsion units for high Arctic operation and the understanding that the ridge load derivation used as the standard scenario requires further validation before prescriptive requirements can be set. 3.2.2 Considering Ch 1, 3.2 Assignment of ice class 3.2.1, Stern First Ice Class Ships may operate in ice with multi-year inclusions; however, due care is to be taken by the Operator and a reduction in speed is anticipated. 3.2.3 Specific scenarios excluded from Stern First Ice Class Ship operations include:
3.2.4 Further information and practical details on application of the notation can be found in Ch 7, 2.1 References to published papers 2.1.1.
3.3 National Authority requirements3.3.1 Certain areas of operation may require compliance or demonstration of equivalence with National Authority requirements. Table 1.3.1 National Authority requirements for ice-covered regions indicates some of the major National Authority regulations for operations in ice.
