Section 2 Overview of requirements

2.1 Classification

2.1.1 The notation Strengthened to carry cargoes which may liquefy (IMSBC Group A) can be requested when relevant scantling requirements are satisfied.

2.1.2 The notation Strengthened to carry cargoes which may liquefy (IMSBC Group A) is only applicable to vessels assigned the 100A1 Ore Carrier notation.

2.1.3 The notation Strengthened to carry cargoes which may liquefy (IMSBC Group A) is only applicable to vessels having a conventional structural configuration with cargo holds bound by two longitudinal bulkheads widely separated from the side shell.

2.1.4 To qualify for the notations the scantlings of cargo hold boundaries will be assessed (as applicable) against:
2.1.5 To qualify for the notation the following structures are to be assessed:
  • longitudinal bulkheads;
  • intersections of continuous secondary and primary members;
  • cross ties in wing tanks;
  • transverse bulkheads; and
  • lower stool.
They are to comply with Pt 4, Ch 11 Ore Carriers of the Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships, July 2022. Detailed requirements are set out in Pt 4, Ch 11, 1.3 Class notation 1.3.8.

2.1.6 The scantling requirements are additional to the requirements as set out for 100A1 Ore Carrier vessels.

2.2 ShipRight Procedure

2.2.1 The Additional Design Procedure (ADP) Procedure for the Assessment of Ore Carriers filled with Liquefied Cargoes sets out FE requirements for primary structure for varying loading conditions.

2.2.2 The ADP mentioned in Ch 1, 2.2 ShipRight Procedure 2.2.1 is only to be applied to ships having a conventional structural configuration with cargo holds bound by two longitudinal bulkheads widely separated from the side shell.

2.3 Stability

2.3.1 The classification committee requires that ships comply with all requirements of the National Administration and all applicable codes. Relevant here is the IMSBC Code – International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes Code – Resolution MSC 268(85) along with other Codes set out in the Rules.

2.3.2 Paragraph 7.3.2.3, b. of the IMSBC code stipulates that stability calculations, taking into account loading arrangements and possible cargo shift, showing the distribution of cargo and liquids in tanks and of cargo which may become fluid, are to be submitted to an Administration.

2.3.3 LR’s Stability assessment methodology for ships carrying cargoes that may liquefy sets out a suitable method for stability calculations to be submitted.
