Clasifications Register Guidance Information - Guidance Notes for the Certification of Consumables for Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing, January 2021 - Chapter 3 Certification - Section 1 Validity of certification

Section 1 Validity of certification

1.1 Initial certification

1.1.1 Certification will be completed in two parts:
  1. Part 1, a certificate will be issued to the manufacturer of recognition for the supply of wires for WAAM. This certificate will be issued to the manufacturing plant and will be valid for three years, at which point the manufacturer can apply for renewal, see Ch 3, 1.2 Manufacturer Certificate Renewal.
  2. Part 2, a certificate will be issued referencing the manufacturing specification and identifying the wire/gas combination that has been tested together with the process used, the tests completed, the acceptance criteria and the results obtained. This certificate only reports facts it does not certify the combination to manufacture any specific product. The validity of the certificate is subject to annual testing, see Ch 3, 1.3 Annual testing of consumables.

1.1.2 Each package of supplied products is to contain a certificate from the manufacturer, generally as per the following: ‘The <insert name of manufacturer> company certifies that the composition and quality of these consumables conform with those of the consumables used in making the test pieces submitted to and certified by the third-party bodies nominated on the label of this package.’

1.2 Manufacturer Certificate Renewal

1.2.1 Before the expiry date of the certificate, the manufacturer may apply to LR for renewal of the certificate.

1.2.2 A new works inspection will be completed by the LR Surveyor to confirm that the processes of manufacture, including supervision, quality control and record-keeping, are of an adequate standard and that storage conditions and facilities were found to be satisfactory, concerning the wire-gas combinations that are certified.

1.2.3 Certificate renewal is also subject to the certified consumables being re-tested to the original test programme every three years. These tests along with annual tests, Ch 3, 1.3 Annual testing of consumables, are to be witnessed by the LR Surveyor.

1.2.4 Provided the works inspection and all testing are successful, a new certificate is issued certifying the manufacturing plant for a further three years.

1.2.5 Continued product certification is dependent upon the manufacturing plant certification remaining valid.

1.2.6 If the manufacturer has no products certified or if all products become overdue this will void the manufacturing plant certification.

1.3 Annual testing of consumables

1.3.1 Consumables that have been certified will be subject to annual tests to remain certified. These tests are to be completed and reported before the expiry date shown on the certificate. Annual tests will involve a reduced scope of testing; however, as a minimum, the tests defined as ‘Standard Tests’ as per Ch 2, 4.2 Deposited metal test assemblies 4.2.6 will be completed.

1.3.2 At the time of testing the Surveyor is to perform an inspection of the works confirming that the manufacturing processes, quality control, storage and record-keeping are continuing satisfactorily.

1.4 Changes to certified consumables and/or manufacturing process

1.4.1 The manufacturer is to notify LR of any proposed alteration to the formulation of a certified consumable and/or to the manufacturing process. Sufficient detail is to be provided to determine the extent of further testing, where applicable, to maintain valid certification.
