3.1 Symbols

3.1.1 The following symbols are to be used in this Part of the Rules:

M h = horizontal wave bending moment, in kN-m
M lt = longitudinal torsional moment, in kN-m
M sph = splitting moment in hog, in kN-m
M sps = splitting moment in sag, in kN-m
M swh = still water bending moment in hog, in kN-m
M sws = still water bending moment in sag, in kN-m
M tt = transverse torsional moment, in kN-m
M wh = vertical wave bending moment in hog, in kN-m
M ws = vertical wave bending moment in sag, in kN-m
V cr = cruising speed, in knots
δx = displacement in the x-direction, in metres
δy = displacement in the y-direction, in metres
δz = displacement in the z-direction, in metres
θmax = maximum roll angle, in degrees
σ = direct longitudinal stress, in N/mm2
σcr = elastic critical buckling stress, in N/mm2
σcrp = critical buckling stress corrected for plasticity effects, in N/mm2
σyd = specified minimum yield stress of the material, in N/mm2
σvm = Von Mises stress, in N/mm2
τ = shear stress, in N/mm2.
