Section 7 Sea tubes

7.1 General

7.1.1 All sea tube inlets, boxes, strainers and their fastenings should be inspected for signs of corrosion and their condition reported. A large number of sea tubes exist on warships and each will require thorough examination when the opportunity arises during the period of survey. The condition of gratings and their attachment is to be verified. Valves may require to be removed for access. The opportunity should be taken to inspect valves. A list of tubes inspected should be reported.

7.1.2 Sea tubes are an integral part of piping systems and all shipside suction and discharge valves require to be opened up for survey every six years. Examination of valves should include seats, securing arrangements/studs, spindles, threads, and sealing arrangements. It is important that valves are correctly assembled and that they fully close. The operation of valves from local and extended position should be checked for all shipside valves. Where ships have ‘Ice Class’ notations, the de-icing and recirculating arrangements should be checked.
