Section 1 General

1.1 General

1.1.1 For an Initial Survey, a specific safety equipment record or modified Form 2092 will be issued by the LR office undertaking the approval of the safety equipment against the standard nominated by the Naval Authority.

1.1.2 The survey of the ship is to be against the approved record and recorded on the Survey Checklist Form 2113, see Ch 24 Appendix 5 Form 2113(N).

1.1.3 Where changes have been made to the ship, these are to be reported to the Naval liaison office. Guidance will be provided on the appropriate standard and if the modification requires approval.

1.2 Life-saving appliances

1.2.1 The Surveyor, if requested to do so by the Owner/Naval Authority, is to carry out an inspection of all lifejackets, life-buoys, immersion suits, thermal protection aids, and their attachments for effectiveness and condition. Any defects found should be rectified, and defective equipment replaced.

1.2.2 The Surveyor is to check that inflatable life rafts have been serviced by an approved servicing company, and ascertain that they are identified and certificated with a valid date and a condition report for each raft.

1.2.3 The Surveyor is to check that all life raft launching equipment is in good condition and working order.

1.2.4 The Surveyor is to check that the rescue boat, if fitted, is in serviceable condition and that the launching appliance and arrangements are in good working order and in a serviceable condition.

1.2.5 The Surveyor is to check that all life-saving appliances are marked with an identification mark/number for easy recognition.

1.3 Safety equipment

1.3.1 The Surveyor is to check that the vessel has on board ‘up-to-date’ Nautical Publications, Emergency Instructions, International Code of Signals, operating instructions for life-saving appliances and their on board maintenance.

1.3.2 The Surveyor is to inspect all shipboard navigational equipment, signalling equipment (lights and sounds), navigation lights, rockets and signals (pyrotechnics) and black shapes and report on their condition.

1.3.3 The Surveyor is to check that all international signalling flags are on board, in good condition and stowed in a readily accessible position.
