7.1.1 The overboard
discharging of waste material from ships is banned in certain areas
and the Surveyor should inspect the ship to ensure that adequate storage
areas are maintained on board to store galley and messroom waste (i.e.
food and other consumables), packaging, paper, glass, metal, plastics,
bottles, crockery and similar refuse.
7.1.2 There should
be on board the means of reducing or grinding the garbage into particles
that will pass through a mesh size no larger than 25 mm. The Surveyor
is to check and verify that these means are fully operable.
7.1.3 Some ships
may have the means of incinerating waste and in this case the Surveyor
should check that the emissions from the incinerator do not exceed
the allowable air pollutants.
7.1.4 In some ships
there may be a compactor installed to compact all garbage into storable
blocks for later disposal at a shore receiving plant. If such a compactor
is on board, the Surveyor is to check that it is in good working order,
that adequate and safe storage is available on board the ship, and
that means of segregating the garbage into different types of material
are in place.
