Clasification Society Provisional Rules - Provisional Rules for the Construction and Classification of Submarine Pipelines, January 2008 - Chapter 1 Provisional Rules for the Construction and Classification of Submarine Pipelines - Section 11 Corrosion control

Section 11 Corrosion control

11.1 General

11.1.1 Steelwork, is to be suitably protected against corrosion. It is recommended that this be achieved using a coating combined with cathodic protection system. Other methods of protection will be considered for approval.

11.1.2 The splash zone of risers is to be specially considered. A corrosion allowance will be required in addition to any coatings. Risers in J-tubes, etc. will require separate assessment of protection.

11.1.3 Where the cathodic protection system is designed to compensate for loss of protective coating the system should be based on a loss of coating of between 5 and 10 per cent.

11.1.4 Stray currents from barges (luring installation), other trill or work vessels, or platforms in the vicinity are to be avoided and measures taken to ground all possible sources. The most significant source may be the pipe laying welding system.
