10.1.1 The provisions of
this chapter are applicable to ships carrying flammable products and
should be applied in conjunction with part D of chapter 11-1 of the
1983 SOLAS amendments.
10.1.2 Electrical installations
should be such as to minimize the risk of fire and explosion from
flammable products.footnote Electrical installations
complying with this chapter need not be considered as a source of
ignition for the purposes of chapter 3.
10.1.3 Administrations should
take appropriate steps to ensure uniformity in the implementation
and application of the provisions of this chapter in respect of electrical
installations.
10.1.4 Electrical equipment
or wiring should not be installed in gas-dangerous spaces or zones
unless essential for operational purposes. Electrical equipment, cables
and wiring should not be installed in hazardous locations unless it
conforms with the standards not inferior to those acceptable to the
Organizationfootnote. However, for locations not
covered by such standards, electrical equipment, cables and wiring
which do not conform to the standards may be installed in hazardous
locations based on a risk assessment to the satisfaction of the Administration,
to ensure that an equivalent level of safety is assured.
10.1.5 Where electrical equipment
is installed in gas-dangerous spaces or zones as provided in 10.1.4, it should be to the satisfaction
of the Administration and approved by the relevant authorities recognized
by the Administration for operation in the flammable atmosphere concerned.
