Craft should be provided with an automatic
identification system (AIS) as follows:

in the case of passenger
craft, no later than 1 July 2003;

in the case of cargo craft
of 3000 gross tonnage and upwards, no later than 1 July 2006;

in the case of cargo craft
of less than 3000 gross tonnage, no later than 1 July 2007.

AIS should:

provide automatically to
appropriately equipped shore stations, other vessels and aircraft
information, including the crafts identity, type, position, course,
speed, navigational status and other safety-related information;

receive automatically such
information from similarly fitted vessels;

monitor and track vessels;
and
-
.4
exchange data with shore
based facilities.

The requirements of .2 should
not apply where international agreements, rules or standards provide
for the protection of navigational information.

AIS should be operated taking
into account the guidelines adopted by the Organization*.
