3.11.5 Arrangement III

 Gas is introduced at the top of the tank and discharged from the bottom. This arrangement permits the displacement method (see figure 13), although the dilution methods may predominate if the density difference between the incoming and existing gases is small or the gas inlet velocity is high (see figure 14). The inert gas inlet point is often led horizontally into a tank hatch in order to minimize turbulence at the interface. The outlet point is often a specially fitted purge pipe extending from within 1 m of the bottom plating to 2 m above deck level (to minimize the amount of vapour at deck level.)
