Section 2 Application

2.1 Scope of application

2.1.1 Process and criteria in this document are to provide structural adequacy of grillage primary members in way of ice strengthening regions of ships.

2.1.2 Process and criteria in this document are not to be utilised as an alternative to the prescribed requirements for shell plating, local frame, web frame and load-carrying stringers such that do not form part of a grillage system.

2.1.3 The scantlings of web frames and load-carrying stringers are to meet the structural stability requirements of Pt 8, Ch 2, 10.15 Framing – Structural stability of the Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships, July 2022.

2.2 Alternative

2.2.1 In general, the direct calculation is to be based on a three-dimensional finite element analysis (3-D FEA) carried out in accordance with the procedures contained in these guidance notes. Where alternative procedures are proposed, these are to be agreed with Lloyd’s Register (hereinafter referred to as LR) before commencement.
