The Maritime Safety Committee

1 The Maritime Safety Committee, at its sixty-sixth session (28 May to 6 June 1996), agreed to the need for strengthening safety measures for ventilation or inerting of double hull spaces, and prepared recommendations for ventilation or inerting of double hull spaces, as set out in the annex. Member Governments are invited to take necessary action to apply the recommendations on tankers with double hull spaces.

2 The Committee recognized that the recommendations are not exhaustive and that alternative arrangements for ventilation or inerting of double hull spaces may be developed in the future. In order that such alternative arrangements may benefit the industry, the Committee invites Administrations to provide information there on to the Organization, with a view to future revision of the recommendations.
