1 Purpose

1.1 This note provides guidance to Search and Rescue services^footnote of Contracting Governments^footnote in relation to requesting and receiving LRIT information^footnote transmitted by ships^footnote.

1.2 Search and Rescue services (SAR services) of Contracting Governments are entitled, pursuant to the provisions of regulation^footnote V/19-1.12, to request and receive LRIT information for the search and rescue of persons in distress at sea.

1.3 SAR services of Contracting Governments are also permitted to request and receive LRIT information transmitted by a specific ship when an uncertainty^footnote or alert^footnote phase might need to be declared or has been declared in relation to the ship in question or those onboard.
