The Maritime Safety Committee

  1 The Maritime Safety Committee at its sixty-sixth session (28 May to 6 June 1996), with a view to providing more specific requirements for such vague expressions as "to the discretion of the Administration" which are open to different interpretations in IMO instruments approved the interpretations of vague expressions in SOLAS chapter II-l, prepared by the Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Equipment, as set out in the annex.

  2 A list of relevant IACS Unified Requirements (UR), Unified Interpretations (UI) and Recommendations is also given in the appendix. The texts of these IACS, URs, UIs and Recommendations are contained in the appendices of document DE 38/18.

  3 Governments are invited to take account of the annexed interpretations when applying relevant requirements of chapter II-l of the 1974 SOLAS Convention, as amended.
