Section 7 Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear protection (CBRN)

7.1 Functional objectives

7.1.1 The submarine structure, systems and equipment are to be designed to withstand the effects of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear contaminants. Measures are to be taken to reduce the risk of injury to embarked persons.

7.2 Performance requirements

7.2.1 A Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear protection operating concept shall be developed to define the magnitude and nature of the threats and submarine operating conditions. It shall identify the compartments which are exposed and protected.

7.2.2 A monitoring and detection system is to be provided to detect the presence of a threat and to identify the contaminants. Detection is to be provided for the external atmosphere and the internal spaces which may become contaminated in particular operating conditions.

7.2.3 Where required, protection of the internal atmosphere is to be provided by air filtration systems in normal and abnormal operating conditions.

7.2.4 Arrangements are to be provided for personnel to enter and exit the submarine in protective clothing. Suitable cleaning and decontamination facilities are to be provided to prevent contamination of the internal atmosphere.

7.2.5 Where internal spaces are intended to be contaminated, suitable access arrangements and gas tight boundaries are to be provided.
