1.1.1 The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) adopted Resolution MEPC.328(76) with an
entry-into-force date of 1 November 2022. This Resolution amended MARPOL Annex VI
and introduced the requirement for an Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI)
for both new and existing ships, reflecting the amount of CO2 generated
per tonne-mile (cargo carrying capacity).
1.1.2 To achieve compliance with the new EEXI requirements, many ships will need to make
changes to their systems to improve their energy efficiency. Engine Power Limitation
(EPL) and Shaft Power Limitation (SHaPoLi) are the two possible overridable power
limitation solutions that shipowners and operators might consider.
1.1.3 Where an EPL or SHaPoLi solution is proposed to be implemented, the EPL or SHaPoLi
equipment is to be approved by both the Flag Administration and by the
Classification Society prior to installation on board.
1.1.4 This Guidance Note is focused on Lloyd’s Register’s (hereinafter referred to as LR)
Classification requirements for the approval of EPL and SHaPoLi equipment. Survey
requirements are not included in this document and will need to be discussed and
agreed with the LR Survey Team.
