Clasifications Register Guidance Information - Guidance Notes for the Certification of Consumables for Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing, January 2021 - Chapter 1 Introduction - Section 1 General

Section 1 General

1.1 Aim and scope

1.1.1 This document aims to provide guidelines for the certification of consumables for use in Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) in the context of Directed Energy Deposition by Arc (DED Arc). Provision is made for wire-gas combinations for use in multi-run automatic WAAM.

1.1.2 The guidelines do not specifically consider the end application of the component to be built using these consumables; however, the end application is to be considered and that is to be reflected in the range of testing required for certification. It is noted that the design of a final component will have a large dependency on the properties of individual wires.

1.1.3 These guidelines are not limited to any specific material type. However, typical material types may include steels (carbon-manganese, low alloy), stainless steel, aluminium, titanium and copper.

1.1.4 Gases used for WAAM are typically the same as used for welding. However, the use of unique novel gases for WAAM is not precluded. The specific gas used in testing will form the wire-gas combination that is certified.

1.2 Abbreviations

1.2.1 The abbreviations used in this document are:

DED Arc – Directed Energy Deposition by Arc

NDE – Non-destructive Examination

QMS – Quality Management System

WAAM – Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing

1.3 References

1.3.1 The following national and international standards are referenced in these guidelines. The latest version of these standards applies unless otherwise agreed.
  1. ISO 9001 Quality management systems – Requirements;
  2. AS 9100 Quality Management Systems – Requirements for Aviation, Space and Defense Organizations;
  3. ISO 13485 Medical devices – Quality management systems – Requirements for regulatory purposes;
