Section 3 Works inspection

3.1 Works inspection

3.1.1 A full ‘works inspection report’ is to be undertaken by an LR Surveyor, which may be supported by documents produced by the manufacturer. The Surveyor is to confirm the following aspects concerning their effect on the factory’s ability to produce and supply consumables of adequate and consistent quality.
  1. The raw material used in the production of finished consumables is properly identified and stored before being used and traceable during manufacture.
  2. Operators of manufacturing equipment are properly trained and qualified for the tasks performed.
  3. Equipment, including manufacturing, measuring and testing, is suitable for the purpose intended and properly maintained and/or calibrated, taking into account relevant safety precautions.
  4. Quality control operations including suitable checks are made on both part-finished and completed products. Products and/or raw materials found to be non-conforming are separated from production and are not used until non-conformance is resolved.
  5. Packing, batch identification and labelling: Finished product is suitably packaged to protect the product before use. Packaging and labelling include:
    • The manufacturer’s name or trademark
    • The consumable trade name
    • A description of the consumable and its intended use
    • The specification the consumable is made to as applicable
    • An identification number which will enable the full history of the item to be traced
    • If required by the purchaser, their order number or identification mark as applicable.
  6. Storage facilities are suitable for the type of consumables for which certification is required. The storage should be in a suitably dry place, free from the risk of flooding and capable of being operated systematically.
  7. Records show that batches sold to customers are traceable back to the raw material used and that consumables are supplied in chronological order.
