Statutory Documents - IMO Publications and Documents - Circulars - Maritime Safety Committee - MSC/Circular.504 – Guidance on Design and Construction of Sea Inlets Under Slush Ice Conditions – (28 April 1989) - The Maritime Safety Committee,

The Maritime Safety Committee,

1 The Maritime Safety Committee, at it's fifty-seventh session, approved recommendations concerning guidance on design and construction of sea inlets under slush ice conditions, prepared by the Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Equipment at it's thirty-first session (DE 31/16, annex 5).

2 It had been recognized that the problems associated with the intake of sea water for cooling purposes on ships when slush ice conditions prevailed needed special design considerations to prevent the blockage of sea inlets by ice, and consequent damage to ships main engines and other machinery.

3 The Committee, in approving the guidelines shown in the annex, recommends to Member Governments that they be applied in the design of sea inlets for ships which are likely to encounter slush ice conditions during their operations.
