The requirements of this Chapter, except where otherwise stated, are
applicable to engine gearing for main propulsion purposes and for engine gearing for
driving auxiliary machinery which is essential for the safety of the ship or for safety
of persons on board where the transmitted powers exceed 220 kW for propulsion drives,
and 110 kW for auxiliary drives. Alternatively, calculations using the methods defined
in ISO 6336 – Calculation of load capacity of spur and helical gears will be
considered. In any mesh, the terms ‘pinion’ and ‘wheel’ refer to the smaller and larger
gear respectively. Bevel gears will be specially considered on the basis of a conversion
to equivalent helical gears. For torsional vibration requirements, see
Pt 5, Ch 6, 2.3 Scope of calculations.
