Section 5 Role of Lloyd’s Register in commissioning testing of BWMS

5.1 Introduction

5.1.1 An LR Surveyor will normally be in attendance during various stages of the installation and commissioning testing of the BWMS to the ship.

5.2 Installation survey and commissioning survey

5.2.1 An LR Surveyor will conduct a survey of the installation, checking that the mechanical and electrical components are in accordance with the approved drawings.

5.2.2 The Surveyor will also witness an alarm and function test as part of the installation survey.

5.2.3 The Surveyor will witness the commissioning testing and they will review the commissioning testing report and issue an International Ballast Water Management Certificate.

5.3 Approval of service supplier

5.3.1 LR will approve service suppliers who are qualified to conduct BWMS commissioning testing in accordance with the requirements of LR’s Procedures for Approval of Service Suppliers. Following approval, the service supplier will be listed in the LR approved service supplier database. 5.4 Issuance of certification

5.4.1 Shipowners are advised to contact their local LR office or client care manager well in advance of the installation survey being required.

5.4.2 Once the installation has been surveyed, the ship has all mandatory documentation and the acceptance criteria of the commissioning testing have been met, the ship will normally be issued with an International Ballast Water Convention Certificate.
