Application of the amended SOLAS regulation II-2/3

1 The Maritime Safety Committee, at its eighty-second session (29 November to 8 December 2006), adopted amendments to SOLAS regulation II-2/3 (Definitions), adding a definition of cabin balcony as paragraph 53 by resolution MSC.216(82) (annex 1), and also adding definitions of safe area and safety centre as paragraphs 51 and 52 by resolution MSC.216(82) (annex 3). The amendments relating to paragraph 53 in regulation II-2/3 entered into force on 1 July 2008, and amendments relating to paragraphs 51 and 52 in regulation II-2/3 are expected to enter into force on 1 July 2010.

2 The Committee, at its eighty-fifth session (26 November to 5 December 2008), considered the anomaly, contained in the aforementioned amendments to SOLAS regulation II-2/3, that, although amendments relating to the addition of paragraphs 51 and 52 in SOLAS regulation II-2/3 are expected to enter into force on 1 July 2010, the amendment relating to the addition of paragraph 53 in the same regulation has already entered into force on 1 July 2008.

3 The Committee, in order to resolve the above numerical anomaly of paragraph 53 of SOLAS regulation II-2/3, agreed that the paragraph number 53 of the said regulation should remain as adopted by resolution MSC.216(82) (annex 1).
