1.1 Purpose

 The 1981 and the 1983 amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 (SOLAS) include revised requirements for safety measures for tankers. Regulation II-2/59 of these amendments contains provisions concerning venting, purging, gas-freeing and ventilation regulation II-2/59.1.5 states:

  • “The venting system shall be provided with devices to prevent the passage of flame into the cargo tanks. The design, testing and locating of these devices shall comply with the requirements established by the Administration which shall contain at least the Standards adopted by the Organization."
