RECALLING Article 28(b) of the Convention on the International
Maritime Organization concerning the functions of the Committee.
RECALLING ALSO resolution A.684(17) on
Explanatory notes to the SOLAS regulations on subdivision and damage
stability of cargo ships of 100 m in length and over (Explanatory
Notes) and that the Committee, in adopting the regulations contained
in SOLAS chapter II-1 part B-1,
invited Administrations to note that the regulations should be applied
in conjunction with the aforementioned Explanatory Notes which were
adopted by the Organization in order to ensure uniform application
of the SOLAS regulations.
NOTING resolution MSC.47(66), by which the Committee, at
its sixty-sixth session, adopted amendments to SOLAS chapter II-1 part B-1, concerning damage
stability requirements for cargo ships of 80 m and over but not exceeding
100 m in length, which are due to enter into force on 1 July 1998.
RECOGNIZING that, when the above amendments to SOLAS chapter II-1 part B-1 enter into force,
there will be a need for explanatory notes applicable to cargo ships
of 80 m and over but less than 100 m in length.
HAVING CONSIDERED, at its sixty-ninth session, the recommendation
made by the Sub-Committee on Stability and Load Lines and on Fishing
Vessels Safety, at its forty-first session.
1. RESOLVES that the Explanatory Notes adopted
by resolution A.684(17) should also
apply to cargo ships of 80 m and over but less than 100 m in length;
2. INVITES Governments to apply the present resolution
when implementing the regulations on subdivision and damage stability
for such cargo ships, contained in the amendments to SOLAS chapter II-1 part B-1 adopted by resolution
MSC.47(66).
