.1 Where watertight integrity is dependent on
external openings which are used during the operation of the unit,
while afloat, they should comply with the following:

.1 Openings, the lower edges of which are not
to be submerged, include air pipes (regardless of closing appliances),
ventilators, ventilation intakes and outlets, non-watertight hatches
and doorways not fitted with watertight closing appliances; and

.2 Openings such as manholes fitted with close
bolted covers, small hatchesfootnote and sidescuttles
of the non-opening type may be submerged.
.2 The requirements of 3.6.3.2 should apply where
the watertight integrity is dependent on external openings which are
permanently closed during the operation of the unit, while afloat.
