If the decision tree indicates that there is an emulsion,
draw a sample of effluent in a 25 ml graduated cylinder or other tall,
narrow and clear cylindrical container, and let the sample set for
one hour. After one hour, if there is no visible separation (oil or
oil sheen forms at the top of the water column in the cylinder) then
the emulsion is stable. It may be necessary to perform the other tests
listed in the appendices to identify the cause(s) of the emulsions.
