1.1 General

The Provisional Rules and Regulations for Software to be used in Naval Ships, January 2020 (NS Software Rules) were published in January 2016. They are intended to enable the use of Software as an implementation technology for Engineering Systems, without introducing additional hazards. The NS Software Rules provide for different levels of assurance depending on the degree of reliance placed on the Software and the hazards which are being addressed.

The purpose of this document is three-fold:

  • to introduce the concepts of the NS Software Rules;
  • to provide guidance on how to develop software-based systems in a way that will meet the NS Software Rules; and
  • to communicate the way LR will assess Engineering Systems that are implemented with Software.

The meaning of specific terms used within the NS Software Rules and this guidance document have been defined in Ch 1, 5 Definitions The terms have been emboldened where they appear in this guidance document. It is recommended that readers familiarise themselves with the terms before continuing further.
