1.1.1 In accordance with the IGF Code - International Code of Safety for Ships Using Gases or Other Low-Flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code) storage tanks that contain low-flashpoint
fuel for fuelling engines (and/or other consumers) are to be located at a minimum
distance of B/5 or 11,5 m, whichever is less, from the side of the ship, see
Lloyd’s Register Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels, July 2022 (commonly referred to as the
Rules for Gas Fuelled Ships), Pt A-1, Sec 5, 3.3. Where this prescriptive
requirement cannot be satisfied, the Rules, in accordance with the IGF Code, allow
consideration of a ‘reduced distance’ by use of a probabilistic calculation;
see Pt A-1, Sec 5, 3.4 of the Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels, July 2022.footnote
1.1.2 Where space is limited, both the prescriptive and probabilistic requirements on fuel
tank location can be difficult to meet. However, if the hull structure in way of the
tank is strengthened, higher collision resistance is provided. This can reduce
damage penetration from a striking ship and may allow a ‘reduced distance’ to be
considered, subject to the agreement of Lloyd’s Register and the National
Administration, compared with the prescriptive requirement and the probabilistic
calculation.
1.1.4 This document details a procedure to assess equivalent protection of the fuel tank by
analysis of collision resistance of the hull in way of the fuel tank which would
generally be acceptable to Lloyd’s Register.
