4.1.1 This Section gives an overview of the procedure. Technical implementation is
described within Section 5 and beyond.
4.1.2 The procedure is framed on the manufacturer providing an operation manual giving the
weather and sea conditions in which the rig is designed to be used. This includes
limiting wind speeds and other conditions for different sail settings, reefing,
setting sail and performing manoeuvres such as tack and gybe.
4.1.3 The choice of sailing conditions and specification of the design loads in any of
these cases is the responsibility of the manufacturer. In addition a ‘survival’
condition is to be described, typically with all sails and spars stowed.
4.1.4 The certification will be based on the conditions given in the operations manual.
4.1.5 The procedure is further framed on the manufacturer both certifying and providing
evidence that:
- The rig is designed to withstand, with a factor of safety acceptable to LR for
the material and load type, the forces from wind, motions and gravity and
manoeuvres in all foreseeable operation conditions as shown in the operations
manual and during transitions between these conditions.
- The loads on chain plates and mast supports will under no circumstances exceed
the loads for which these points and the hull and superstructure in way are
designed and approved.
- The rig is built in accordance with the design from materials that after
manufacture of the rig have the properties that were assumed in the design. The
materials are required to maintain these properties for the design life of the
yacht, assuming normal use and maintenance of the yacht and rigging.
Alternatively, renewal requirements are to be included in the maintenance
manual.
- The rig can be built, transported, stepped on the yacht and tuned without
detrimentaleffects on the rig, or on the hull and superstructure of the yacht.
Detrimental effects can occur from motions during transport or lifting.
Composite structure can incur internal damage due to insufficient support
without showing damage on the outside.
- The prescribed inspections and maintenance procedures can be expected to be
carried out effectively while applying normal safe working procedures and
without detrimental effects on the rigging or on the hull and superstructure of
the yacht.
4.1.6 Testimony and evidence, as specified above, should be contained within the TCF.
