For the purposes of this chapter a “marinised” crane should
be understood to mean it is a type originally designed for use ashore,
typically lorry mounted, that has been modified to better withstand the
rigours of the marine environment. It will have been subject to a marine
paint scheme and the hydraulic cylinder rams will either be manufactured
of stainless steel, or of mild steel with multiple chrome coatings to
reduce the risk of corrosion. In addition the crane will either have
been de-rated by a significant amount, typically 30% to take account of
the dynamic loading effect of being vessel mounted, or the vessel will
be supplied with load charts, based on harbour conditions.
